Frequently Asked Questions

What ages do you teach?

From 3 years old in our parent & child class, and 4+ for our independent classes — right up to advanced swimmers.

Where are lessons held?

At the Mercure Haydock pool (Penny Lane, Haydock, St Helens, WA11 9SG).

When do lessons run?

Term time, Monday to Friday. We run 37 weeks across the year — see our term dates for the current schedule.

How much are lessons and how do I pay?

Group lessons are £45/month (£14.50 per lesson plus a small annual admin fee, spread evenly over 12 months). Private lessons are £30 per lesson. Payment is by Direct Debit via GoCardless, managed through Membermeister.

How do I sign my child up?

Head to our Request Enrolment page and fill in the form — we'll be in touch about availability.

What should my child bring or wear?

Suitable swimwear and goggles. We don't use armbands as they can hinder development; we use aids like noodles or fins where helpful.

Do parents go in the water? Can I watch?

For children aged 4+ (excluding 1-to-1s), parents don't enter the pool. We ask you to stay in the building but not spectate poolside during the lesson, and we'll bring your child back to you at the end.

How does my child progress?

Lessons follow our own pirate-themed award framework (Ship Mates, Voyagers, Seafarers, Captains, Wayfinders), broadly aligned to Swim England stages, and we celebrate every milestone with Watch Me Awards.

My child is nervous or has additional needs — can you help?

Absolutely. We're an inclusive swim school and welcome children with additional needs such as autism or ADHD into our mainstream classes. All our lessons are child-led — we never force a child to do something they're uncomfortable with.

What if we miss a lesson?

Where possible we'll offer a catch-up; if one can't be arranged, a lesson credit is added to your account.

What if my child is unwell?

Please keep them home if they're ill (e.g. sickness or diarrhoea within 48 hours, fever, conjunctivitis, etc.) — full details are in our illness policy.

How do I cancel?

We ask for 28 days' written notice. Any unused lesson credits count towards your notice period.

Are your teachers qualified?

Yes — our lead teachers hold current DBS checks, safeguarding training, relevant teaching qualifications and their own insurance.
